Join us as an Assistant Scientist and make an invaluable contribution to our Food Safety & Biosecurity!

As an Assistant Scientist within the Ecotoxicology team at Fera you will be responsible for undertaking general laboratory maintenance tasks to ensure the smooth running of the facilities.  You will assist with GLP compliant laboratory studies as well as other work e.g. semi field / field studies and non-regulatory research projects as required within the team.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Be responsible for laboratory facilities (which include daily equipment checks, instrument maintenance and general laboratory housekeeping).
  • Conduct work to Good Laboratory Practice quality system in compliance with standard operating procedures.
  • Working on regulatory and/or research-based laboratory studies into the toxicological effect of chemicals in the environment. Performing laboratory procedures using standard laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in the development of protocols and procedures for invertebrate cultures and work closely with research teams to ensure that study requirements are met.
  • Ensuring husbandry facilities are maintained to promote health of organisms and optimum condition of working environment.
  • Undertake field and semi-field based procedures.
  • Maintain written and computer records.
  • Data entry and checking for study directors.
  • Calculate and report results.

What we’re looking for:

  • Experience in laboratory techniques
  • Experience of operating within a quality system (e.g.GLP, UKAS, ISO etc)
  • Preferably experience of aquatic ecotoxicology project experience
  • Ability to keep clear and accurate written records of experimental work to a high standard
  • Ability to work within a team and independently with supervision.
  • Practical IT skills in software packages such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experienced in organising, prioritising and completing work to required standards and to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and accommodating to changing work priorities.
  • Knowledge of some regulatory risk assessment experimental studies
  • Flexible working, candidates must be willing to travel on occasion and work weekends as required.
